How to Make Craps Bets

Craps is an incredibly popular casino table game, with a fast pace and the potential for enormous payouts.  In order to wager successfully on the game, you will need to understand the wide array of possible craps bets.  The number of bets can be intimidating at first, but there are only a few that are really worth your time and money.  Here is a rundown of what is worth your wagered dollar.  The following bets offer the lowest house edge, as well.

Type of Craps Bets

Come/Don't Come – These bets are placed on any roll that is not a come-out roll.  In other words, they are placed after the player has established a point.  Once the point has been set, bettors can place a Come bet by placing the appropriate chip(s) in the Come area of the craps table.  A roll of 7 or 11 wins the Come bet, while a roll of 2, 3 or 12 means the bet is lost.  Any other roll becomes the point for the bet.  A roll of 8 will find the dealer moving your chip into the corresponding box on the table.  If the player rolls that number, you win.  A roll of 7 means your bet is lost.  A Don't Come bet is the same idea, but works in reverse.  You are betting on the player to lose, rather than win.  That means a roll of 7 or 11 is good for you, while point rolls are bad.

Free Odds – This is the only dead even bet in the casino.  A Pass or Come wager is backed by an equal amount, only once a point has been set by the shooter.  Place your chips behind the Pass line and tell the dealer the odds.  If the point number is rolled prior to a 7, the wager Pass or Come bet receives even money, but the odds wager receives true odds payouts.

Pass/Don't Pass – These wagers are the same as Come/Don't Come, but are placed on come-out rolls.  In addition, these are the best bets in the casino, especially for novices.  Betting the Pass Line means you are betting the shooter will win.  Don't Pass bettors are betting that the player loses out of the gate and will not set a point.

Place/Buy – In this bet, you tell the dealer what number you want to wager on winning.  You don't wait for the player to establish a point.  If the player rolls that number before they "seven out," your bet wins.  These bets are placed after the come-out roll.

Hard Ways – 4, 6, 8 and 10 are the hard way numbers.  In order to achieve these numbers, both dice must show the same number of pips.  For instance, an 8 must be made up of two dies showing four pips each.

Proposition Bets – These are bets placed on single rolls of the dice.  For instance, you can bet on craps being rolled by betting on 2, 3 or 12.  If that number comes up, you win. If it doesn't come up, you lose.  Either way, your bet is over.

Big 6/Big 8 – These bets are paid even money, rather than the actual odds of the roll and are placed on a roll of 6 or 8 before a 7 is rolled.  These bets are stacked in the house's favor
