What Does Online Poker and Coffee Have in Common?

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

One of the world’s most popular and well known online gambling brands is Bodog,an industry name that has appeared frequently in news over the past few years. Today, the company has good news to report—the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group (MMGG) will now have full operational rights of Bodog domains, as well as corporate and business decision making power for the company, which also means Calvin Ayre is back in the company’s driver’s seat. No longer will the former operators, 1st Technology, own the Bodog name, but they will no longer own control of the company, as well.

The underlying issue that was behind all the Bodog drama, in a nut shell, is that Ayre (of Bodog) and Scott Lewis (head of 1st Technology) allegedly continued a hostile fight for years regarding the domain name. Now that Ayre has regained complete control over his company and was removed from the missing persons database when he resurfaced back in April of this year, it looks as though Bodog may have a business plan in place. Some predicted that Ayre would resign from his position at Bodog and move on, but this hypothesis has been proven untrue with the re-emergence of Bodog domaind and a couple of big projects in the future for the company.

The Bodog brand is not finished; in fact, it’s just getting started and has a lot of new changes on the way. For starters, Ayre has announced the projected release of a Bodog branded poker network. In addition, Ayre will be making Bodog into a franchise, so independent operators can run their own Internet poker rooms in other territories. For instance, the South American market is something Ayre has set Bodog’s sites on.

But there’s more—somewhat unrelated to the online gambling industry that the Bodog brand embodies, the company will open a global coffee franchise and product line under the Bodog brand name. Devoted Bodog players will soon be able to wake up to a morning cup of Bodog Espresso. This venture seems out of place in the scheme of things and somehow unachievable; who would want to compete with Starbucks anyway?

Vanessa Rousso Is Hot

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

There are not many poker professionals that are sexual, sensual, and appealing to many people. Vanessa Rousso, however has all of those qualities and more. She has more to offer than sex appeal, though. Vanessa is an intelligent successful woman who has made quite a name for herself on the poker circuit.

Aside from being in this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, recently she starred in a commercial for Pokerstars.com that is sure to raise eyebrows once it hits the television. The question that surrounds the controversial ad is whether or not she is representing herself appropriately.

Rousso commented, “(I am) filming a scandalous commercial for PokerStars. Let’s just say bathtub and bubbles are involved.”

The commercial was shot at this year’s World Series of Poker, as she found time to squeeze in the shoot during her breaks and down time during the tournament. Rousso won $80,000 at the 2009 WSOP, and there is no telling what she made for her role in the steamy commercial ad.

Twenty-six year old Ruosso prefers No Limit Hold ‘Em. She says, “It’s not only my game of choice, but it’s pretty much my specialty. I just turned 26, but I’ve been only at it for three years on the pro circuit, and so I’m still learning a lot about No Limit Hold’em tournaments. But I think I’m at the point where pretty much in the next year I’ll be ready to start focusing on other things. I’ve already started to work on Razz; that’s probably my next best game. I also want to extend to the spread games. I really like those. I think I have an edge in those because I’m very math oriented. There’s a lot of math in those and I have a good memory for cards at the table.”

Furthermore, she came in second at the 2009 NBC Head’s Up Championship. She then went on to win a million dollars at the EPT World Poker Tour Monte Carlo Grand Final. Watch out for this star on the rise as a female poker sex symbol and world-class player, as well.

PKR and Ultimate Bet Vegas Parties

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Vin Narayanan, Casino City reporter, made a trip to Las Vegas for the PKR.com Party and the Ultimate Bet 10th Anniversary event, and he wrote about his experience of what happened during his stay there. Narayanan stated, “But there’s one force in Sin City more powerful than heat- nightlife.”

On Wednesday night during his stay, he went to the PKR.com party which was at the Hugh Hefner Suite. The party was so packed that nobody was being let in unless they were the PKR.com players, whether they were even on the guest list or not. Narayanan and another Casino City reporter that was with him, Gary Trask, could not even get into the party until around 1 a.m. The party was in a two-floor suite on the 34th and 35th floor at the top of Fantasy Tower at the Palms. In the suite there was a lounge and a dance floor, a balcony with a pool with a beautiful view of Vegas, a media room, and a bedroom with a circular bed. Also, there was a hot tub and even massage tables. PKR.com had not only rented out the Hefner suite that also came with an open bar, music, professional dancers, and even Playboy bunnies. PKR.com’s party was a huge hit with everyone, players and guests alike.

Studio 54 had to shut down for another big Vegas party— the UltimateBet event. There were many UltimateBet pros at the party such as Adam “Roothlus” Levy, Tiffany Michelle, Annie Duke, and Phil Hellmuth. During the party Hellmuth was lowered down from the ceiling and floated over the dance floor and congratulated UltimateBet on their 10th anniversary. There was also a raffle for a seat in the 2009 Aruba Poker Classic. Narayanan said that both events were very sought after tickets and that “all in all, a good couple nights in Vegas.”

PokerStars Takes In Luske and Mercier

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Two very well-known profesional poker players have joined Team PokerStars Pro, Marcel “The Flying Dutchman” Luske and Jason “treysfull21″ Mercier.

It’s no surprise that PokerStars wanted to nabs these guys, either. The famous Dutchman has made quite a name for himself in the poker world. In 2008, he took home the European Life Time Achievement Award for poker. He is known worldwide, having made an impact on the game of poker on multiple continents. In 2001 and 2003 he was ranked as number one player in the game at the European Poker Awards, and it is obvious that Europe has developed quite a love for the trendsetting Luske, as he definitely has his own sense of style and fans love it.

Luske has won many different titles along the way, though the one that really paved the road for him was his Main Event place at the 2004 World Series of Poker in 2004, though just missing the final table in 10th place. He also came in 2nd that year at a Stud Event. After that, it was a series of subsequent wins that just get him barreling through the live poker circuit. In 2005 and 2006 he took home the championship title at Bellagio’s Five Star Poker Classic. The best part about Luske though is that he presents himself with the upmost charm that his a well rounded personality affords. He maintains a high respect for the game while maintaining an approachable everyday personality.

Luske is not only a poker guy though. He has a soft spot for charity work, loves the entertainment industry. Being famous on television was actually his childhood dream, which sort of became a reality when he sang “The Poker Song” at the 2006 WSOP. Since then, he has performed at various poker events.

Jason Mercier, on the other hand, has not been around quite so long as Luske. He first made his debut in the poiker scene in 2008 at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Since then, he has been well-received by the fans as they have watched his cashes surmount. He has won $3.2 million in the past year alone, intimidating his opponents left and right.

“Becoming a member of Team PokerStars Pro means a lot to me. I’m so excited to be playing for the site I first started playing on. I feel like this solidifies my standing as one of the top poker players’ around.” Mercier commented.

These two new additions to PokerStars professional poker team of already unmatchable standards, are sure to bring out the game in poker.

Annie Duke’s Picks for Ante Up For Africa Poker Tourney

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The hottest spot for stargazing tonight will be at the Amazon Ballroom at the Rio where a slew of A-list celebrities will compete in the 3rd-annual Ante Up for Africa charity poker tournament.

Some of the Hollywood stars that are confirmed for this event include Matt Damon, Ben and Casey Affleck, Jason Alexander, Mekhi Phifer, Charles Barkley, Brad Garrett, Hank Azaria, Reggie Miller and Sarah Silverman! Marlon Wayans, Kenny Smith, Herschel Walker, and Montel Williams have also promised their attendance.

Many poker pros can also be expected including Phil Hellmuth, Howard Lederer, Andy Bloch, and Erik Seidel.

Two co-founders behind the biggest charity tournament in poker, which supports humanitarian causes in Darfur and Sudan, actor Don Cheadle and World Series of Poker ace Annie Duke are also getting geared up for the big event.

“I’m really excited,” Duke says. “We’ve got a huge, wonderful list of celebrities.” She also recommends two of the VIPs in attendance to keep your eye on. “Ben Affleck is a very good player, he made our final table last year,” she says, though she is the one he credits with teaching him to play poker.

She also suggests that Seinfeld star, Jason Alexander, might make a splash: “Jason Alexander also has made our final table before, so he’s actually done really well in our event, too.”

“I’d say that those, of the people that we have coming, are probably the two most dedicated poker players. I think that (most of the Hollywood stars) don’t take it quite as seriously as the poker pros do, so you expect to see the ones who take the poker much more seriously (at the final table),” she says, adding, “You can expect to see anybody at the final table. That’s the beauty of poker.”

Charles Barkley will also be there, the infamous retired NBA star who is known for not having the best of luck in Vegas. “Do I have a gambling problem? Yeah, I do have a gambling problem,” he commented to ESPN. “But I don’t consider it a problem because I can afford to gamble.”

The $5,000 non-profit tournament has raised almost $2 million since it started back in 2006. The five-hour accelerated pace tournament will be held tonight, followed by a VIP after party at Caesars Palace’s Pure. You can watch the event on ESPN on Tuesday, August 11, 2009.

What’s in it for the Dealer?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

With all the attention focused on the players and their hands, not much attention is paid to the people dealing them. With 57 events running from May 27 to July 15, by the time it’s said and done with, a crew of 850 dealers will have worked their asses off to keep the games running. Last year, 725 dealers were employed by the WSOP. Back in 1970, at the first WSOP, only one dealer was used, mostly because there were only six “registered” players. The point is there’s been a significant increase in players and dealers over the last 39 years of the World Series of Poker.

Tournament Director Jack Effel says, “We’ve come light years, quantum leaps throughout the years. This year we set a goal of 1,000 dealers and ended with a list of 930, with 850 showing up. You need that many because there’s approximately 300 tables going at any given time.”

For working the series the dealers earn $6.85/hour plus they still make a few hundred dollars per day splitting tips. They also receive small percentage of the entry fees paid by the players, according to Effel.

For a chance to work poker’s biggest event, dealers come to Vegas from all over the world. On average, about half of the WSOP are actually Southern Nevada residents, and at least 600 of them have worked the WSOP in past years.

New dealers were selected from a pool of 700-800 applicants who are required to have at least six months experience dealing poker. The selection process started in January, which includes telephone and then in-person testing of knowledge of poker and technical skills like pitching cards and overall attitude. Only the best of these are ultimately selected to work the final table of the main event that takes place in November.

Effel says, “Every year we get a little better at the process. If they show proficiency over the phone, and they have the technical ability to do it, we’ll take them.”

With so many hands being played each day, up to 500 per day (20 per hour), mistakes are bound to happen. Dealers are only human; apparently they mistakes too like misreading hands, miscalculating the pot, or misdealing.

Eric Chan, a 24-year-old University of Las Vegas student, has dealt in the WSOP since 2007. He says, “I’ve been wrong quite a few times, but I haven’t screwed up to the point that I can’t reverse it. It’s about keeping your cool and realizing that it’s just chips and just people at the table.”

Twenty-nine-year-old Doug Chase started dealing in 2004 and has traveled around the world working at various tournaments. He says, “There are definitely memorable hands. In 2005, I was dealing a game that was just way out of my league. Marcel Luske was sitting at the table, and he won a $10,000 hand.

“When the hand was over, he threw me a quarter, a big, green $25,000 chip. I said, ‘Thank you,’ and started putting it in my pocket when he said, ‘Wait, I threw you the wrong chip,’ and started pulling out a small one. I dropped my head and started to give it back and he was like, ‘Ha, ha—just kidding!’ He had the whole table laughing.”

Earlier this year, Chan also earned a little extra money when poker pro Antonio Esfandiari placed a bet with the whole table that Chan wrongly revealed a mucked hand.

The floor manager ruled that Chan was correct, which cost Esfandiari more than $100.
“It felt good to have someone come over and tell everyone that I had been right,” Chan commented.

When asked how it feels to hold the fate of a player and millions of dollars in his hands, literally, Chan replied, “It is unbelievably cool to be part of the action, dealing at a level that I’m not able to play at. It’s not who wins and loses necessarily; poker has a great community. Every single hand, I’m making nine people unhappy and just one person happy. Hopefully I get to make everybody happy at least once.”

Poker Stinks

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

It’s been interesting to read some of the insider comments on Twitter this year from some of our biggest poker pros. Apparently, a lot of them are concerned with their opponents personal hygiene. Here are some of the best ones, collected by Gambling 911.

Maria Ho said, “And here I thought I was home free with an empty seat to my left for two hrs only for it to be filled by another smelly guy. Odor Tally +1.”

Doyle Brunson: “they should have a hygiene policy at tournaments. Some foreign guy sat next to me and smelled so bad i almost gagged at the table.”

PokerTips.org also mentioned on their site that there was a big hygiene problem at the host hotel (the Rio) in general. They dissed the Rio for not being on the Strip, but mostly for being overly populated with poker players, referring to it as an “island of poker players,” which is not all it might seem to an outsider sitting at home reading about the excitement. They stated, “Poker players are annoying, smelly, and disgusting people who stand in the hallway complaining to someone who isn’t listening about how their Ace-King got cracked. It doesn’t take a whole lot of exposure to that environment before the thought of getting the hell out of there sounds fantastic.”

Just this year, Michael Wax was kicked out of the Borgata Atlantic City after playing poker for 17 hours. Understandably, he began to smell and was asked to leave. According to Wax, he said to the told casino officials, “There’s no question I stink. I’m not denying it. I do have an odor. I’ve been playing for 17 hours.” Ultimately, Wax filed a complaint with the Casino Control Commission and wouldn’t mind an apology by the Borgata.

The moral to this story is, many poker players may and do stink. If you are a poker player and think this might apply to you, you might want to seriously think about purchasing some deodorant.

US Seizes Online Poker Money

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

The US federal government has recently seized millions in cash from banking accounts that have been used in the processing of online poker transactions. This attempt by the government to thwart online gambling by US players is one of the most aggressive yet. There are doubts, though, that this will have any effect on the US gambling industry. An anonymous industry official out of Vegas says, “I haven’t heard one person saying, ‘I’m through with online poker.’ It’s just making people more militant and bitter against the government.”

However still, there are some who believe it may actually scare some US online poker players from continuing to deposit their money. Editor of iGaming News, Christopher Krafcik, says, “If I begin to lose players because they’re afraid to deposit with me, then I lose games and the rake they generate. If I was a player, I’d consider taking my money elsewhere.”

The online gambling industry giants operate overseas and don’t consider those US laws that criminalize gambling to be relevant to them, even though billions of dollars of their revenue is generated from US players depositing money online to gamble with. Since the UIGEA, the target of the US government has been the payment processors that facilitate cash transactions. By cutting off the money line, the US government hopes to eliminate the illegal activity (i.e. online gambling). US banks have pretty much backed out of the transaction processing business, but players’ money was, until recently, considered to be safe in the hands of offshore handlers.

But on June 2nd, 2009, a US federal judge authorized a warrant issued by a New York attorney to seize the assets of a Wells Fargo account held by a company that processes online poker transactions from players within the US. The company is Account Services, Inc., but all other details of the seizure are sealed by the US Justice Department.
All that is known is that the federal government has frozen or seized at least $30 million from banks associated with online gambling, including PokerStars and FullTilt, but this isn’t the first time this has happened, and it likely won’t be the last.

The ray of hope here is the Poker Players Alliance, the trade’s lobbying group, which is collaborating with a legal team to prove that the money taken was from the players, not the sites, and there is no law against individuals gambling online. Their side is with the players as well as the sites, as getting the players’ cash back is critical to the super sites’ reputations.

US Government Seizes Poker Funds

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Four American banks were asked by federal prosecutors to freeze $33 million in funds that were owed to 27,000 players from four offshore poker websites, including some of the bigger name sites such as PokerStars and FullTilt Poker.

The executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, John Pappas, said prosecutors asked Wells Fargo, Citibank, and two smaller banks to freeze accounts belonging to the companies, Account Services and Allied Systems. Both of these companies are payment processors who make payments to players on behalf of poker sites.

The government’s actions came when checks issued to poker players by these two companies began bouncing. The online casinos have assured Pappas that they are planning to pay players the money that they are owed.

A spokesperson for Citibank did confirm that they have received a request from prosecutors. Wells Fargo received a court order to freeze funds as well, stating they have a policy to comply with “valid instructions to seize funds” and declined to comment further.

From Poker Players Newspaper, I. Nelson Rose says, “It’s very aggressive, and I think it’s a gamble on the part of the prosecutors.” He further explains that it is not clear what law would govern the seizure of money that belonged to poker players, as opposed to the money belonging to the companies involved.

From a letter to one of the smaller banks, Alliance Bank of Arizona, prosecutors stated the funds in question “constitute property involved in money laundering transactions and illegal gambling offenses.”

A lawyer representing Account Services, Jeff Ifrah, explains that as far as he knows, the government “has never seized an account that belongs to players who are engaged in what I would contend is a lawful act of playing peer-to-peer poker online.”
