Everest Poker Charity Tournament

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Everest Poker has been branching out into the live poker scene more and more lately. Just recently, on May 17, they sponsored a charity event, inviting celebrities, actors, and businessmen, who just happen to all be poker players as well, to gather at the infamous Hotel Du Cap in Cannes, France for the Everest Poker sponsored, Wilhelm and Karl Maybach Foundation Gaming night.

Buy-in was a $1,500 donation for the opportunity to be seated in an exclusive poker room with Celebrity Poker host, Jamie Gold, who was joined by MC Phillip Baker. The game was a no-limit Texas hold’ em tournament yielding exclusive prizes, that included a $15,000 Las Vegas WSOP package and a $5,000 gold watch, courtesy of Everest Poker.

Outside the tournament, some of the high-profile spectators walked the red carpet with the beautiful Cape of Antibes sunset descending in the background. Celebrity appearances included Paris Hilton and her boyfriend, Doug Reinhardt and poker fan, Willem Dafoe. Dafoe, who was in town to promoting his new movie, Antichrist, spent much of the evening hanging out with the rest of the guests, posing for pictures, and getting to meet Jamie Gold. Also in attendance was Emile Hirsch, star of Milk and Alpha Dog, and Watchmen star, Malin Akerman. The Sunflower Children president, Helena Houdova, and actress and model Phoebe Price were also at the event.

Poker players and celebrities, who attended this Everest Poker event, claim the night was one they will remember.

The Wilheml & Karl Maybach Foundation website states:

“The Wilhelm & Karl Maybach Foundation invests in the select few who have the skill, the potential and the vision to help the many. For a select few protégés from across the globe who face adversity in realizing their true potential, we provide mentorships with leaders in their discipline, meaningful stipends, leadership training, and exclusive introductions to the very decision-makers who can open doors for them worldwide.”

… a nice charity for Everest Poker to support.

New Poker Show: Face the Ace

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

This summer, The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) television network begins screening for a new poker program, Face The Ace, to be hosted by Steve Schirripa. It will air for the first time on August 1st, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. and then move to Saturday afternoons in September.

Schirripa served as Entertainment Director at the Riviera hotel and casino in Las Vegas, but is best known for portraying gangster Bobby Baccalieri on a little HBO show called The Sopranos.

Face The Ace will be produced by Poker Productions, which also produces the late night Poker After Dark hit show on NBC. Seven episodes have been promised. If the show takes off, possibly more will be taped. Also involved is online poker room Full Tilt, which will host all qualifying tournaments. Two lucky FT players will show up on every episode.

Once on the show, Face The Ace contenders will get to pick one of four doors. Behind each door will be a secret professional poker player, who will ultimately be put up against the lucky contender in a no-limit Hold’em poker game.

If the contestant wins his match, he will have the option to take his winnings and go, or he can choose to risk it all to compete against another door/professional player for an even larger pot. If he wins, he can go again against a 3rd pro for a $1 million prize. Should he lose, he walks away with nothing.

Executive Vice-President for parent firm NBC Universal Incorporated, Jerry Petry, says,”There’s nothing like it on the air right now. This will attract the core poker fans who watch it on our network but will also open it up to a new audience of people who like gameshows and aren’t necessarily poker fans going in.”

Entraction Sells Online Poker Rooms to iGame

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Online gaming network, Entraction, will sell their assets in Casagaming Ltd. to iGame Ltd. Entraction develops software systems for online casinos, poker rooms, and sportsbetting. One of their subsidiaries, Casagaming, operates two popular Scandinavian sites, 24 Hour Poker and Martin’s Poker (named for Martin de Knijff, past WPT winner). In order for Entraction to move from operator to software provider, they have decided to do some house cleaning and sell their operating company to iGame.

CEO of Entraction, Peter Aström, suggests that the sale of the gaming operations represents a landmark event for the company, enabling them to fully concentrate on their supplier operation. He says, “In a time when many of our competitors do the opposite and start to mix the roles of operator and supplier, Entraction’s focus makes us both more attractive to new partners and more transparent to investors. I am certain that iGame Ltd. will continue to successfully operate the sites in the Casagaming Network.”

According to PokerScout, Entraction is the 11th largest online poker network in the world. Over the last six months, the network’s cash game player count, on average, has increased by roughly 50% and sees up to 2000 players during peak times. As a result of the sale, Casagaming Ltd. will be closed. The Entraction Network is also home to i4Poker, RedBet Poker, and Victor Chandler Poker.

What does this mean for members of these sites? Nothing really. It is the general consensus of all involved parties that online poker at both 24 Hour Poker and Martin’s Poker will continue on as normal. The new owner of, iGame, already operates the successful online poker room, Pokerihuone.com, which is also on Entraction’s network, so not much should change.

Bluff’s 2009 POY to Win Bike from OC Choppers

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Bluff Media, top poker industry magazine, announced a new prize for the 2009 Player of the Year (POY) award recipient. This year, a custom-built chopper from Orange County Choppers will be presented to the winner by LUGZ Footwear, the magazine’s newest sponsor.

Eric Morris, Bluff Media co-founder, suggests that LUGZ, a non-industry sponsor, will add prestige to the awards this year, helping to take the magazine and the event more mainstream.

The winner of the POY award is noted for demonstrating the best results in live poker, over a calendar year. Points vary due to the playing field and buy-ins at each qualifying tournament and are based upon size of playing field, buy-ins, and finish level. This specific formula is used to, more or less, mathematically configure the top player of the year in the professional poker player field.

Executive VP of LUGZ, Larry Scwartz says, “LUGZ is very excited to be sponsoring Bluff Magazine’s Player of the Year Program. The aggressiveness of these players and the pride they take in their craftsmanship in such a synergy of our own brand.” He continues, “And being able to award this Player of the Year with the LUGZ custom-built OC Chopper seemed like the perfect move.”

OC Choppers built the winning bike back in 2006, which was showcased on Discovery Channel’s “American Chopper.” Leaders in the 2009 race for POY are Michael Binger with Bertand Grospellier, Jeff Madsen, and Scotty Nguyen following closely behind. Past winners of the prestigious Player of the Year award include Phil Ivey, Chad Brown, and reigning POY, John Phan.

M.I.A. Calvin Ayres Surfaces

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Calvin Ayres, the infamous founder of Bodog online casino and poker room, has resurfaced in Antigua after he mysteriously vanished for a while. The good news is he is alive and well, has taken permanent residence in Antigua, and has been receiving the media’s investigative approach in a very benevolent manner. This comes as quite a surprise, as Ayres has been unavailable for comment for quite some time.

So what’s he been doing? He’s been working on his charities, doing some consulting in Europe and Asia, running a coffee company, building a relationship with Haydock, which he claims will soon present Bodog games, and rebranding the Bodog brand. His recent comments include, “Stay tuned for some very interesting developments in Europe, and discussions have already begun with potential licensees for the Canadian and other markets.”

On the subject of the Bodog brand, Ayres says, “Bodog is often approached and is considering brand license arrangements with a number of potential partners, including a clothing line in the UK and certain retail offerings. They’re also in the process of formalizing a process for potentially interested partners to make this submission and evaluation process simpler – they will be launching a website shortly, which will tell others who think they have a product that will suit an edgy street brand like Bodog, and how they can enter into discussions with us. We hope to have this up over the next few months, as I think there are a ton of products that can be in the market under the Bodog Brand.”

On the subject of financial security, Ayres comments, “Most of my wealth was lost when the value of Bodog was significantly reduced in 2006 due to policy changes in its primary market. I have also donated a lot to charities and causes that I’m passionate about over the years, but the journey so far has been fun, so I have no regrets.”

At present, his current project is a “lighthearted and entertaining website featuring industry news,” featuring Bo Da Dogg, a canine character who will emerge as an industry analyst.
